Liberal Senator for New South Wales, Marise Payne, has backed new Liberal Party leader Tony Abbott.

Mr Abbott was elected leader today after defeating Malcolm Turnbull and Joe Hockey in a leadership battle.

"Our leader Tony Abbott is strongly committed to Australia and the Liberal Party and he will be an energetic and strenuous campaigner across the country," Senator Payne told The Western Weekender.

"He has been fighting and campaigning on behalf of the Liberal Party for many years, and he will be a familiar face to many people in western Sydney."
