A security fence is set to be installed around the Berkshire Park Rural Fire Brigade’s headquarters on Sixth Road due to constant vandalism of the site.
Late last year, Londonderry MP Allan Shearan and Penrith Mayor Greg Davies announced financial contributions to the fence’s construction, which will provide extra security for the station. The State Government will contribute $8,000 to the fence’s construction, while Penrith City Council will provide $6,620.
“The local community applauds the work undertaken by the Brigade in providing an essential service fighting all types of fires and bush fires not only in the local area but frequently in other areas of the State,” Mr Shearan said.
“Unfortunately, vandals frequently cause damage not only to brigade property but also the personal property of volunteer fire fighters who provide their time and place themselves at risk in protecting the local and the wider community in New South Wales.”
Captain Brendon Roberts from the Berkshire Park Rural Fire Brigade said the fence would make up part of the renovations that have been undertaken at the Sixth Road headquarters.
“The building was not big enough so we extended and made a new indoor training facility, office, store room, a shower block and vehicle bays,” he said.
“We fundraised and extended the building ourselves but the fence has really capped it off and we’re appreciative of the work of Council and Allan Shearan.
“The fence has been ordered and is being constructed at the moment and with any luck should be installed by the end of January.”
Captain Roberts said given the fact that the headquarters backs onto a reserve and is located next to a facility used for parties, it was important to implement measures that ensured the safety of those working at the station.
Mr Shearan particularly acknowledged in the strongest manner the support freely given by the volunteers of the Berkshire Park Brigade and said the Government would continue to provide wherever possible appropriate funding and support to ensure the volunteers are able to perform their duties with minimum risk for maximum benefit to the community.
Cr Davies said Council was delighted to be able to contribute to the Rural Fire Service needs through a joint operation with the Iemma Government.
